BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council will hold a Special Meeting Monday evening to consider the applications received requesting a share of the city’s Hotel/Motel Tax. The city has received nine applications seeking nearly $173,000. The requests do not include items the council has allocated funds for in the past, like the 4th of July fireworks. The Council has traditionally kept a miscellaneous line item for other possible requests that are received through out the year. One of the recent requests that came forward for the council was just at their last meeting, to assist in funding a “Laborshed Study”. State code specifies what activities are eligible for Hotel/Motel Tax proceeds.
The largest requests for the next fiscal year were received from the Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Boone County Economic Growth Corporation. They have historically been the largest requests. The Convention and Visitors Bureau has requested nearly than $89,000 and the Economic Growth Corporation request is for $35,000. The Boone County Historical Society has requested $15,000. The Fairboard and the Boone Action Association each requested $10,000. The Fairboard for improvements on the Community Building and the Action Association for the planned River Valley Festival over the Memorial Day weekend.
Other requests were received from Boone Community Theatre for $5,000, the Canine Corral Committee for $4,000, the Boone City Parks Foundation and the Ericson Public Library for $2,500 apiece.
The grants being sought are for the next fiscal year, beginning July 1, 2018.
