MADRID, Iowa—The Madrid City Council is scheduled to hold a special council meeting Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. to first confirm the termination of Police Chief Rick Tasler. Secondly, the Council will consider moving forward with the process to search for a new police chief and finally, the Council will consider requesting the Boone County Sheriff to fill in for police services and to supervise the department in the interim.
Madrid residents have a Special Election scheduled for next Tuesday, July 31st, to select a Mayor and a Council member. Both positions had been filled previously by appointment. A petition to have a special election for Mayor apparently failed to garner enough eligible signatures, but a petition to hold a special election for the 2nd Ward Council seat was successful. Candidates for Mayor are Thomas W. Brown, Kurtis Kruse and Jonathan Whitten. Candidates for the 2nd Ward Council seat are Steven Burich and Eric Ohrt. Kruse was appointed Mayor by the Council after Dirk Ringgenberg resigned in April. Ohrt was then appointed to fill the vacant 2nd Ward Council position.
