BOONE, Iowa—Municipal Elections are five months away and Steven P. Ray, 48, of Boone has announced he will seek reelection to a fifth term as city council member at-large on the Boone City Council. Ray has served over 15 years on the council and also is the city’s mayor pro temp.
Ray joined the council in January 2004 winning reelection in 2007, 2011 and 2015. He has served as chair of every city committee including policy and administration, economic development and, currently, chairs the city’s public safety and transportation, and utility committees. He also represents the city of Boone on the county’s 9-1-1 Service Board, Emergency Management Commission and the Communications Center oversight board.
Ray has served in some form of city, county, state and federal government for 31 years and comes from a public safety background. He worked 7 years with the sheriff’s office communications center in Boone; 22 years with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa State Patrol and Communications Division with offices statewide; briefly with the Iowa Department of Corrections as a correctional officer in Fort Dodge and, currently, as manager of Building Security Services for Iowa State University. Ray has served for 16 years on the federal Selective Service local board in Iowa and has most recently been elevated to the state appeal board on 2016.
Ray is a graduate of DMACC – Boone Campus in 1990, Iowa State University in 1992 and completed the certified public manager program with Drake University in 2012.
“I have decided to run for reelection for one reason: I am still having a great time representing the best interests of the people of Boone,” Ray said. “I have been honored to work as a team with many great and talented people on the city council over the years. We maintain a committed group on the city council and I would like to continue working with all of them to see Boone grow and expand as we have experienced in recent years through our robust economic development strategies and initiatives,” Ray provided in a statement.
“Boone has seen so many areas of improvement in my time on the council. There have been struggles, and some disappointments when things didn’t turn out the way the council wanted it to but, all in all, things have been steadily moving in the right direction. Like the other past and current councilmembers, we see our team goals as the impetus to make the best things happen for Boone and I remain committed to that purpose. We want to see the best services we can provide without a significant cost to taxpayers. These can be achieved by overseeing future business expansion and further housing growths throughout Boone augmented with the council’s understanding that quality of life improvements to the city are what make us an attractive city to live, work and raise a family,” Ray concluded.
Statewide municipal elections will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Ray believes his record on the council speaks for itself and he would appreciate his long-time supporters to re-elect him to his at-large seat so he can continue to work for ALL the people of Boone just as he has from his first day in office.
