Iowa Historical Society spokesman Michael Morain was among those who watched when the “Big Boy” steam locomotive come through Boone on its way east and says there were hundreds of people at the intersection where it was scheduled to stop. It is heading back west now as the Union Pacific continues the celebration of the 150th anniversary — of the transcontinental railroad. So if you missed it when it came through Boone a week or so ago, or if you want to see it again, the Big Boy will be coming back through Boone County
The Number 4014 locomotive that is one of only eight remaining of the original 25 of this kind originally built for Union Pacific in the 1940’s. It will spend about 45 minutes in Boone at Quartz Avenue on Friday, August 2nd, and then continue on to the next stop in Carroll.
