BOONE, Iowa—4-Her’s faced one of America’s greatest fears on July 15th… public speaking. Youth from around the county prepared and delivered educational presentations, public speeches and extemporaneous speeches designed to educate and entertain their audience. Six of these acts have been selected to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair in August.
Educational Presentations
The following 4-H’ers have been selected to advance to the State Fair with their educational presentations:
- Katie Barnes, with a presentation titled “Plate Tectonics”
- Natalie Bretey, with a presentation titled “Patient Care Technicians”
- Claire Jonas, with a presentation titled “ADHD”
- Paige Garcia, with a presentation titled “Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis”
Receiving a purple ribbon for her presentation was Clara Fulton.
Receiving blue ribbons for their presentations were Owen Bergstrom, Caraline Hertz, Hannah Heckman, and Summer Crocheck.
Receiving red ribbons for their presentations were Lane Longhorn and Lydia Longhorn.
Extemporaneous Speaking
Five senior age 4-H members entered the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest which required them to draw a topic and prepare a speech about it in thirty minutes. Speeches are required to be between four and six minutes long. Selected to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair were Alanna Schroeder and Hannah Heckman. Receiving a blue ribbon were Zoe Mamakos, Katie Barnes, and Natalie Bretey.
Public Speaking
Six 4th-8th grade 4-H members participated in the Public Speaking Contest, which required them to choose one of three topics and come prepared to give a speech about it. This contest is unique to Boone County. Emily White received a purple ribbon. Lydia Longhorn, Alex Jones, Samantha Starbuck, Adelyn White, and Lance Longhorn received blue ribbons.
This year’s contest judges were Sherry James, Marlene Geiger, and Ellen Sattler. These judges took on the role of evaluating each presentation’s content and delivery and had the opportunity to provide their suggestions for improvement. Six volunteers also helped make this event possible: Melody Bethards, the 4-H Communications Superintendent, Hudson Bretey, Zachary Britton, Jessica Fisher, Crystal Haglund, and Amelia Verkade.
