McGonigle’s Food Store, Inc and Fareway Stores, Inc Reach Agreement for Purchase and Expansion of Neighborhood Store

Posted on 04 February 2020 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—McGonigle’s Food Store, Inc. and Fareway Stores, Inc. are pleased to announce they have entered into an agreement for Fareway to purchase the assets of McGonigle’s and proceed with the expansion of the market at 79th and Ward Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri, that was recently approved by the Kansas City Council.

“I have been through a lengthy rezoning process, where my main priority has been to be a good neighbor to the community that has supported our family for almost 70 years,” states McGonigle’s Owner Mike McGonigle. “Our store location has been challenging due to a 1940’s building, which is too small for our expanding catering and deli business, and not in conformance with today’s boulevard and parkway standards. This rezoning process is our attempt to bring the building and surrounding land into a conforming use that meets city code requirements, is first class in appearance, and enhances the customer experience. Now through this process, I am honored that another family-owned and operated company shares my vision. Fareway’s core values align well with my commitment to quality, integrity, and personal service. I am confident they will be good stewards of the legacy of McGonigle’s. They have grown a large family of stores throughout the Midwest by providing great quality, service, and value.  I am grateful for the support that the community of Kansas City has provided to me. It has been an honor and privilege to be a part of your lives for many years. I hope that your support for Fareway will be as strong and welcoming.”

“As we explored entering Kansas City, McGonigle’s was exactly the right fit for us,” said Fareway President and CEO Reynolds W. Cramer. “Its reputation for product excellence is well known. But it has also partnered, complemented, and served its neighborhood and area residents with excellence for two generations. We will continue and build on these foundations for years to come.”

Next steps include finalizing the purchase and transitioning Fareway’s Meat Market operations into the existing store. Fareway will continue to offer prepared food under the McGonigle’s name. Fareway and McGonigle’s anticipate being closed only a few days for this transition. The exact timeframe for the future expansion is unknown. Once reopened as Fareway Meat Market and McGonigle’s Kitchen + Catering BBQ, long-time McGonigle’s employee, Randy Ross, will head Fareway’s kitchen and catering operations; and Fareway will offer their unmatched, full-service meat counter, with expanded seafood, artisan cheeses, high quality wine, craft beer, and many other unique offerings. Fareway will also continue to honor McGonigle’s gift cards.
