BOONE, Iowa—Fareway Stores, Inc., headquartered in Boone, presented a $250,000 check to the DMACC Foundation and DMACC President Rob Denson today to be used for the new DMACC Boone Campus Student Activity Center.
Fareway President and CEO Reynolds W. Cramer presented the check to DMACC President Rob Denson outside of the construction site. Fareway will be the sole and exclusive sponsor of the new gym and multi-purpose area within the Boone Campus Student Activity Center. The facility will be named, “Fareway Fieldhouse.”
“We are proud to partner with DMACC on their Boone Campus Student Activity Center,” Cramer said. “Not only will the Center help add to the high quality experience available at the DMACC Boone campus, it is a public-private commitment to support the overall well-being of the Boone community.”
Fareway and DMACC are also working out the details to hold a Fareway night each fall or spring in the new facility for Fareway employees to attend an athletic event.
The $6.5 million project includes two college-size basketball/volleyball courts. These courts also contain three 40’ X 70’ baseball/softball batting cages that drop down from the fieldhouse ceiling. The new student activity center also contains a state-of-the-art weight room designed by Powerlift, a contemporary sports medicine lab, an indoor golf performance center, storage space, office settings and a family room.
DMACC Director of Athletics BJ McGinn said the new project will add more than 28,500 more square feet to the existing gym.
“The current facilities on the Boone Campus are dated, overcrowded and do not accommodate the current needs of the students,” McGinn said. “DMACC’s athletic teams practice off site during much of the year and when the facility is used by the student athletes it limits the availability for our student population.”
DMACC Boone Campus Provost Dr. Drew Nelson said DLR Architects and Baxter Construction have told him they are on schedule to complete this project by this coming September.
Denson said Fareway has been a long-time supporter of DMACC and particularly of the DMACC Boone Campus.
“In a few short months, I look forward to seeing Fareway’s logo prominently displayed in the new gym and multi-purpose area and on the exterior of the building,” Denson said. “We want to thank DLR Architects, Construction Manager Baxter Construction and all of our contractors for their great work on this important project.”
Fred Greiner has many connections to this project. Greiner was the former President and COO of Fareway until retiring a few years ago, is a long-time DMACC Board of Trustees member, is on the DMACC Boone Campus Foundation Board and is one of the fundraising chairs for this new Student Activity Center.
“Fareway Fieldhouse has a great ring to it,” Greiner said. “Having the new student activity center will help with recruiting new student athletes, plus all students will have access to the facility. It will also present a very positive image to the community and will help enhance our campus.”
Greiner also said with the new facility, the Boone Campus will have the ability to conduct more camps for various sports. With more middle and high school students and their parents on campus, Greiner said more of these potential students may choose to attend the DMACC Boone Campus for their college classes.
DMACC Foundation Executive Director Tara Connolly said fundraising efforts continue on the Boone Campus Student Activity Center. She said contributions can be made by contacting the DMACC Foundation at foundation@dmacc.edu or calling (515) 964-6229.
All DMACC athletics are located at the DMACC Boone Campus. Those sports include: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s baseball, women’s softball and women’s volleyball.
