On Sunday the Iowa Department of Public Health identified 503 new cases of coronavirus in our state, rounding out a weekly number of 3,759 COVID-19 cases. That means almost 11% of Iowa’s total number of coronavirus cases – just over 35,000 – have occurred in the last seven days. The department reports that 749 Iowans have now died of COVID-19; six on Saturday and 1 in Sunday’s update, including 3 in Polk County and 1 in Webster County this weekend. Since 5:00 on Friday afternoon in central Iowa, 271 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Polk for a total of 7,437, 42 in Dallas for 1,402 there, 30 in Webster for 374, 15 in Story for 860, 4 in Hamilton for 201, 1 in Greene for 31, and 6 in Boone County for 169 overall. Statewide there are 177 patients currently hospitalized for COVID-19, a decrease of 1 from Saturday, but well over 26,000 Iowans have recovered, including 119 in Boone County. For the 1 in 8 Iowans who have been tested for coronavirus, the infection rate is down slightly to 9.3%.
