On Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 620 new cases of COVID-19, an increase of 221 in the last twenty-four hours, pushing the pandemic total to nearly 275,000. After attributing five deaths to coronavirus on Saturday, the Department indicates one additional death in our state on Sunday; 3,745 Iowans have now succumbed to COVID-19. Since 8:00 on Christmas night in central Iowa, 139 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Polk County; 26 in Dallas; 16 in Story; seven in Webster; a couple in Hamilton; just one in Greene; and 14 this weekend in Boone County for 1,817 all told. Statewide, 553 Iowans are hospitalized for COVID-19, down five from Saturday and almost 229,000 have recovered, including 1,389 in Boone County where the fourteen-day positivity rate has dropped a percentage point in the last week to 11%.
