On Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 1,121 new cases of COVID-19, an increase of 412 in the last twenty-four hours, pushing the pandemic total to more than 284,000. After attributing 48 deaths to coronavirus on Saturday, including one in Polk County and another in Dallas, the Department indicates no additional deaths were reported on Sunday, but 3,946 Iowans have succumbed to COVID-19. Since 6:30 on New Year’s night in central Iowa, 270 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Polk County; 52 in Dallas; 37 in Story; four in Webster; three in Hamilton; none in Greene; and 23 this weekend in Boone County for 1,943 all told. Statewide, 577 Iowans are hospitalized with COVID-19, up five from Saturday, but over 244,000 have recovered, including 1,536 in Boone County, where the fourteen-day positivity rate has jumped five percentage points in the last week to 16%.
