BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for 96 year old Lucille “Lucy” Herrick of Boone.  She passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021 in her home, surrounded by her family.

Lucy was born in Ferguson, Iowa on December 9, 1924, the daughter of Avis and William (Howe) Ferguson. She graduated from Ferguson School in 1942.  On April 25, 1945, Lucille married Earl Herrick in Iowa City, IA.

When Lucy was young, she worked at her father’s service station in Ferguson.  Then later she got a job assembling gas regulators at Fisher Governor in Marshalltown.  Some years after raising her family she did residential house cleaning. In 1987, Lucille began her favorite career in the full-time ministry work.

After marriage Lucy and Earl spent a brief time living near San Bernardino, California, after that they settled in Boone, Iowa to stay. They started their family in 1946, when they had a daughter, Judy, and then in 1949, they had a son, Doug.  Family was always important to them; they would often take trips together to visit Lucy’s family. They also looked forward to yearly assemblies and conventions together.  Camping and fishing were favorite pastimes for them all. Some of their favorite spots were Don Williams, Spring Lake, Saylorville and Blackhawk Lake. Lucy and Earl enjoyed their trips to the island of Maui to visit Doug and his family. She always enjoyed being with and hearing about the lives of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She loved talking about them often.

Lucy was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on December 17, 1960.  This proved to be the real focal point of her life.  She continued in the full-time ministry work for 34 years.  Many of her friends considered her to be their “pioneer partner”.  She loved the opportunity to visit with people and to help them understand the promises held in the Bible.  She continued sharing her faith by writing letters up until her final days.

Lucy loved feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. She always had to stay busy and crocheting hats was a favorite way to do that. To everyone she knew she would say, “Do you wear a hat? Do you want a hat? What color do you want?” Another thing she was famous for was her cooking and baking.  Her specialties were her pies, sweet milk pancakes, homemade ice cream, angel food cake, and cinnamon rolls.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; her daughter, Judy; and her siblings, Glen, Wayne, Nadine, and Dillman.  She is survived by her son, Doug (Janice) of Wailuku, HI; her son-in-law, Larry Whitmer of Boone; grandchildren, Beth (Phillip) Draman of Winterset, Amanda Persinger of Ames, Amber (Ryan) Rush of Boone, Timothy (Ka’i) Herrick of Wailuku, HI, Seth (Nghi) Herrick of Kihei, HI, and Nathan (Ashley) Herrick of Eagle River, AK; and great-grandchildren, Devin (Kelsey) Rush, Coltin and Gracie Rush; and Cameron, Taytum, Shaylee and Hali’a Herrick.

The Family would like to invite you to join them for a livestreamed Memorial Service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021. The livestream can be viewed on the Tribute Wall of Lucy’s obituary on the Schroeder-Reimers website.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.  Online condolences may be left to Lucy’s family at www.schroedermemorial.com.
