Boone School District Voters Support Elementary Building Project

Posted on 02 March 2021 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The unofficial elections results from Tuesday’s Special Election for the Boone School District showed strong support for a new elementary school, replacing the current Page and Lincoln buildings.  Voters also easily approved having Matthew Elthon continue to fill an at-Large position on the school board.  Elthon was appointed to fill the vacancy created when Joey Weber resigned last year.  He received 1157 votes against 62 write-ins.

The unofficial results had a total of 1,526 votes cast with 1,229 supporting the question of letting the district borrow up to $23-million for a new early childhood center.  There were 297 no votes.

After the unofficial results were released, the Boone School Board issued this press release:

The Boone Community School Board of Directors are extremely happy to see this bond issue pass. We would like to thank the Vote YES committee and their Co-Chairpersons, Chad Houston and Dan Gould for all their hard work to get this measure passed. Also, a big thank you goes out to all those people who took time out of their busy schedule to vote YES.

The new elementary school is the last step in a process which started 19 years ago when a group of community leaders met late into the night to develop a plan for the school district. The order finally decided was Middle School, High School Remodel, and then the new elementary school. It was thought this could take 25 years to complete, but after tonight, the new elementary school will be open for the fall of 2023.

This Elementary Project has been in planning for over four years. The board would also like to thank prior board members, Kirk Leeds, Jan Westrum, Scott Degeneffe, and Jean Sorsen for all their work to help make this project a reality.

Starting tomorrow, the district will begin the next stage of this project. We will be holding informational sessions to get final design ideas. The board hopes to have the project out to bid by later this fall. Preliminary site work will start in November, and concrete should start getting poured one year from now. The school is also looking forward to working with the city on the new road.

Thank you to all the citizens of Boone CSD for your faith in the district. The district will continue to Expect the Best, Achieve Success. Go Toreadors!
