BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County Engineer’s Office has released the most recent information about a bridge project on QW Lane, over the High Trestle Trail. This project will have an impact on not only residents on QW Lane, but users of the High Trestle Trail. On April 21, 2021 Boone County let a project to replace the Wooden Bridge over the High Trestle Trail on QW Lane. The Plan for replacement is to build a 14’ x 14’ x 98’ Box Culvert under the existing bridge. Jensen Construction Company of Des Moines was the low bidder.
On May 20th a preconstruction meeting was held to meet the contractor and discuss various aspects of the project. Project scheduling and questions about the plans and specifications were discussed to make sure all parties understand all aspects of the project. A detailed schedule was submitted by Jensen Construction.
Below are some of the important dates from the schedule.
June 1 – Weather permitting contractor mobilizing on site to clear trees in the trail right of way.
June 14 – Grading for temporary trail.
June 17 – Paving temporary trail with asphalt
June 22 – Grading and constructing culvert and headwalls
August 30 – Pave new trail sections that tie existing trail into the ends of the new box culvert.
September 7 – Construct roadway detour route
September 21- Remove existing bridge
September 28 – Install roadway fill and granular surfacing
October 18 – Open road to Traffic
October 19 – Remove roadway detour
November 1 – Remove all roadwork signs from road and trail
A friendly reminder about the schedule is that Mother Nature can control the schedule.
Boone County Engineer Scott Kruse also wrote that he would ask all residents to use caution and drive carefully during construction. During the use of the detour route it may become inconvenient because of the differences in elevation from the surface of the trail to the level of the roadway. We have attached a sheet from the plan showing the detour route and the project extents.
A special thank you to the families that have made the sacrifice to allow the residents to use their property for the temporary access. I ask all road users to treat that property with respect. The project would not have been possible without their help.
For the trail users the temporary trail will be built to allow use of the trail during the first phase of construction. When the box culvert is being backfilled and bikes are traveling through the new structure please still use caution. During the construction pedestrians may be asked to stop and wait for a few minutes to guarantee safe passage through the site during the transition phases of the project. Construction fencing and barricades will be up directing riders to the temporary trail. There is never a perfect time to build a multi-modal project. Use extreme caution when approaching the construction site.
A construction site can become an attractive nuisance. We ask that everyone avoid loitering in the area.
