BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for Mildred Quarnstrom, age 101, of Boone, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until time of service. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Ogden.
Mildred Mary (Buckley) Quarnstrom was born on December 20, 1919 at the family home in Ogden, the daughter of James and Mary (Tilley) Buckley. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1937, and later attended AIB in Des Moines.
Mildred was united in marriage with Harry Everett Quarnstrom on June 23, 1941 in Ogden. The first few years of marriage were spent outside Iowa as Harry served in the United States Navy. Following his discharge, the couple returned to the Boone area raising their three children: Mark, Kevin and Kathi.
Mildred was an active member of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Her strong Catholic faith was her guiding principle which made her a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She volunteered at the church and the VFW Auxiliary for many years.
Mildred worked at the Boone News Republican for several years as a reporter. She then took a job at the Boone County Clerk of Court Office where she served as deputy clerk until she retired. She then served as an election official for Boone County elections.
When not working or volunteering, Mildred and Harry could often be found enjoying the day on Don Williams Lake fishing off their pontoon and playing cards with family and friends. They also enjoyed mushroom hunting and raspberry picking. Mildred had a lifelong insatiable appetite for books and she could frequently be found snuggled in her blue recliner for hours reading her favorite authors’ latest novel. When not reading, you could find her at the kitchen table working on the New York Times crossword and jumble puzzles. Mildred often traveled and vacationed with family members creating many wonderful memories for everyone.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harry in 1993, infant daughter Leann Marie, 7 brothers and 1 sister. She is survived by her children, Mark Quarnstrom of Boone, Kevin (Janet) Quarnstrom of Waterloo and Kathi (Jim) Robbins of Boone, 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Mildred’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Sacred Heart Church in Boone.
