BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for Karin K. Shirley, age 84, of Boone, Iowa. She passed away at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. She had been a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home for only 13 days. Karin had been a resident of Boone since 1962.

Karin was born to Paul and Maxine Grauer of Cherokee, Iowa on August 7, 1937. After graduating from high school, she attended cosmetology school in Sioux City, Iowa. While living in Sioux City she met Donald Shirley. The couple were married in 1957 and celebrated nearly 63 years of marriage together. Don and Karin had three children; Renee in 1960, another daughter who died shortly after birth, and Kevin in 1965.

Karin worked as a school lunch monitor at Franklin grade school and in later years was an ad inserter for the Boone County Shopping News. Hobbies included knitting, crocheting, playing cards, and of course, having coffee at the Colorado Grill with her long-time school PTA pals of more than 50 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone.

Karin is preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, and her husband Don. She is survived by her children; Renee Shirley of Boone, Kevin (Lori) Shirley of Boone, grandson Nicholas Shirley, and great-granddaughter Ryan Marie of Urbandale, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Jessten Heimer officiating. Interment will be at Bass Point Cemetery following the funeral service. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2022 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Boone Humane Society or Trinity Lutheran Church and School.
