Twelve BHS Students Earn Highest Ratings at District Speech Contest

Posted on 01 March 2022 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone High School speech team competed at the IHSSA District Individual Speech Contest held at Urbandale High School on Saturday, February 25, 2022. Fourteen of Boone’s twenty-one performances earned the highest rating (I) and will advance to State at ADM in Adel on Saturday, March 12th.

A single judge evaluated each performance, awarding students a rating on a scale of 1-4 as well as offering a written critique so students can work on refining their performances should they receive the highest rating that advances them to State.

Two students earned I’s in both of their events at the district competition:

  • Senior Maddy Morris in both Poetry Interpretation and Prose Interpretation.
  • Sophomore Collin Holman in both Acting and Improvisation.

It is a remarkable achievement for a student to qualify in both events in which they competed.

Ten other performances also earned I’s at the district competition:

Seniors:

  • Chloey Davidson-Germain in Solo Musical Theatre
  • Allie Hunter in Acting
  • Jason Prazak in Improvisation
  • Logan Shearer in Spontaneous Speaking

Juniors:

  • Clara Carpenter in Acting
  • Dayton Morris in Storytelling

Freshmen:

  • Delainee Anderson in Original Oratory
  • Cassie Molitor in After Dinner Speaking
  • Cy Morris in Original Oratory
  • Emma Westfall in Poetry Interpretation

Also participating in districts were Freshman Avery Overland, Sophomore Annika Byrd, Juniors Chelbie Brown, Seth Coleman, and Alex Cunningham.

Students will now have two weeks to prepare for the State tournament.
