BOONE, Iowa—Mary Jane (Kreuscher) Maybee, daughter of Roland F. Kreuscher and Mary G. (Hunt) Kreuscher, was born September 18, 1929 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mary died April 20, 2022 at Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa at the age of 92.
Mary grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin and graduated from Bradford High School in 1948. After high school she attended Whitewater University and worked in the sporting goods department of Sears Roebuck. Mary was married to George F. Maybee on May 26, 1951. They were the proud parents of Debra, Michael, Kathleen, and Timothy.
Mary was a lover of the arts, nature, her family and her community. She became a Girl Scout leader in 1958 and joyfully mentored these girls for over 25 years. Gardening was her favorite hobby and she spent most of her days creating beautiful gardens, just as her father had taught her so many years ago. In the early 1980’s, Mary opened Maybee’s, a women’s clothing store in Boone, which she enjoyed running for several years. She, along with her husband, George, were founding members of Boone’s annual celebration, Pufferbilly Days. She was also active in several volunteer organizations, including Community Theater in Oelwein and Boone, children’s summer theater, the Boone Area Humane Society, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, and many others. Mary conquered two rounds of breast cancer and ovarian cancer and was an inspiration to all for her grit and determination to live life to the fullest. Mary was honored as Iowan of the Day at the Iowa State Fair on August 14, 2012.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 70 years, George, who passed away May 20, 2020 in the midst of Covid, her parents, her older brothers, Daniel and Jerome; her grandson, Michael Sandholm, and numerous beloved pets. She is survived by Debra (Larry) Andres of Buffalo Grove, IL; Michael Maybee of Blowing Rock, NC; Kathleen (Tom) Sandholm of Chester, NH; and Timothy (Bette) Maybee of Middleton, WI; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all.
Visitation began at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 27th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm. Mary was laid to rest beside her beloved husband, George, at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone immediately following the service.
