Lou Jones

BOONE, Iowa—Lou LaVerne Jones, age 91 of Boone, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Lou was born on November 12, 1930 in Boone County, the son of M.S. Stone and Ida Caroline (McDaniel) Jones. He was called up to active duty in 1950 to serve in the Korean Conflict and honorably discharged in 1951.

Lou was united in marriage with Marilyn Jane Reed on October 14, 1950 in Temple, TX.

Lou worked construction for UBC Lumber in Boone and he and his brother Jiggs ran Jones & Jones Remodeling. Lou worked in the paint lab at Iowa State University for many years until retiring in 1995.

Lou was a member of the Boone American Legion Post 56 and V.F.W. Post 817. Lou and Marilyn enjoyed card nights and Lou played Pitch, Poker and other card games with his card buddies up until 2020. Lou and Marilyn would attend many VFW and Firemen’s Balls, where Lou showed off his smooth dance moves. He was quite a craftsman with woodworking, making furniture for his family, reading westerns and war novels and completing many crossword puzzles.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marilyn; 5 brothers and 5 sisters; and daughter-in-law, Jean Jones. He is survived by his son, Mike Jones of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Rhonda Dennis of FL, Mary Lou Williams and Marcia Backous, both of Boone; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great-great granddaughters; sister-in-law, Kathy Reed; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Lou’s wishes, he was cremated and there will be no services held. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family.
