BOONE, Iowa—Charles “Charlie” Lee Shadle, 75 of Boone, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at his home.
Charlie was born the son of Ronald and Bernice (Davis) Shadle on May 15, 1947, in Boone. He graduated from Boone High School in 1966.
On July 10, 1967, Charlie was united in marriage with Sandra “Sam” Majors. Charlie and Sam were blessed with two children, Wendy and Troy. The couple later divorced.
Charlie served in the Navy Reserves for over 25 years and actively served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years.
Charlie had an attention to detail, very fitting for his work as a master carpenter. He worked on CY Stevens, Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium at Iowa State, as well on many side projects for family and somehow never finishing his own projects. Charlie ended his work career as a millwright in factories until he no longer could due to his heart condition.
Charlie went through several health complications, including a quadruple bypass 16 years ago (doctors were amazed he was still working as a laborer) and cancer 8 years ago (that he was given 3-4 years). Charlie was a tough man but had a huge soft spot for animals. He was quite the cat and nature lover.
Charlie was a hunter and fisherman in his earlier years. He enjoyed going to the casinos, thrift shopping and putting puzzles together. He loved nighttime talk radio, listening to it each night as he went to bed.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Doug (Connie) and Darold Shadle.
He is survived by his daughter, Wendy (Stephen) Miller of Maryville, MO; son, Troy Shadle of Boone; grandchildren, Anna, Elle and Jonah Miller; longtime companion, Roberta “Bert” Lewis of Berwick; sisters, Karen Donovan Howe (Bob Howe) and Sandra Wisecup (Garen Christensen), all of Boone; brother, Hollis (Leah) Shadle of Boone; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, June 27, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel in Boone. Burial will be in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
