BOONE, Iowa—Robert Joseph Moritz, age 90 of Boone, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2022 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home.
Bob was born on September 22, 1931 in Storm Lake, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Grienke) Moritz. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1950.
Bob was talked into joining the National Guard by Daryl Berguson, joining in 1958 where he served for 39 years 7 months and 26 days. He was active duty in the Army from February 5, 1952 until February 11, 1954. Bob served overseas in Japan during the Korea War for over a year. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and National Defense Service Medal. Bob received the Iowa Commendation Medal, 15-year State Service Award and Iowa State Service Ribbon – 35 years among others. Following his retirement from the National Guard in 1991, he volunteered at the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum at Camp Dodge for nearly 15 years.
Bob was united in marriage with Betty Lou Jacobson on November 21, 1955 in Storm Lake. The couple lived in Storm Lake until moving to Algona in 1963. Later in 1970 they moved to Humboldt and settled in Boone in 1980.
Faith, Family and Friends- That is the way Bob lived his life. He was proud to be born and raised catholic; a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Bob was the best Dad and Grandpa you could imagine! He had friends from all over and many great buddies over the years.
In his early years, Bob enjoyed hunting squirrels, rabbits and deer and fishing. His job required reading a lot of military regulations. In his free time, he loved mystery and western movies. Bob was a collector of guns, coins and stamps as well as model military aircrafts along many photographs of aircrafts.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty in 2002; daughter, Gloria Renz; son-in-law, Allen Schultz; great grandson, Sean Schultz; brother, Curtis (Lois) Moritz; sister, Darlene (Ray) Snyder; and brother-in-law, Fred Hall.
He is survived by his daughter, Anita Schultz of Algona; grandchildren, Robert (Dee Dee) Schultz, Randy (Codi) Schultz, Renee (Jerimie) Harris, Stacey (Carlos) Sanchez, Justin (Erin) Renz and Amanda (Shawn) McGrath; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 1 great-great-great grandchild on the way; sister, Nancy Peters of Storm Lake; along with numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 11, 2022 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until time of mass. Military Honors will be conducted by the Iowa National Guard and Boone County Veterans Council at the Linwood Park Cemetery following mass. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery near Storm Lake.
