BOONE, Iowa—Paul was born in Emmetsburg, IA October 19, 1945, to Ernest and Mable (Cox) Slater. After high school in Emmetsburg, he went to Junior College and on to UNI. He worked for Iowa Public Television for over 25 years, then retired and drove a school bus for United Community Schools.
In 1979, he met and married Mary Wing, and in 1984 the Lord blessed them with the gift of a son James Paul for 19 years. James has preceded Paul to eternal life as did his parents, brother Alan Slater and sister Sharon Sonier.
Paul and Mary have enjoyed singing, laughing, camping, and traveling to all 50 states and Europe. Paul also loved playing the French horn, collecting antiques, riding in cars, trains, and old planes, and spoiling his wife. But all this pales by comparison to the love he has from his Savior, Jesus Christ whose death ransomed his life.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Boone, his sister Phyllis of Jackson, MN, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who called him “great”. An obituary doesn’t begin to reflect Paul’s unique humor and view of the world.
He is missed.
