BOONE, Iowa—Some 2200 Mediacom customers in Boone were impacted by a construction accident that severed Mediacom’s fiber service on the east side of the city. According to Mediacom, the company’s network operations center saw that modems for Mediacom Internet customers in Boone switched to inactive at 10:30 Monday morning. Responding personnel located the fiber cut, caused by road work near Quartz Avenue and 200th Street, the extension of the Industrial Park Road to Highway 17.
Because of the damage, the fiber was excavated, and crews specializing in splicing fiber prepared to make repairs. Mediacom reported that the location, near the road work, required additional fiber to be excavated. That led to a longer length of fiber to be installed which required boring and dealing with frozen ground conditions. Mediacom crews worked overnight to complete the splicing required at both ends of the new fiber cable. Work was completed at 4:39 Tuesday morning.
The outage was limited to the Boone area and affected some 2200 customers of Mediacom’s high speed internet service.
