BOONE, Iowa—Laura Jane McGehee, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, and friend, passed from this world to her heavenly home on November 25, 2022.
Laura was born August 27, 1955 to Robert and Helen (Borland) McGehee in Boone, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of Boone and attended Trinity Lutheran School and Boone Junior-Senior High School, graduating in 1973.
Laura’s many occupations included working at Spurgeon’s, cleaning homes as well as commercial businesses, line worker at Archway Cookies, certified dental assistant, and a receptionist for the City of Boone.
Laura had many hobbies and loved travel, cross-stitch and crafting, baking, and watching old classic movies and sitcoms on DVDs.
Her love of travel began with many family trips and camping in local IA parks as well as National parks across the US. One of her most cherished places to camp was Rocky Mountain National Park, CO. Laura also loved her trips to the Oregon Coast and New York City.
Being an avid cross stitcher, Laura created many beautifully stitched pieces made with loving hands and given to family and friends. Each of her nieces and nephews all received a special Christmas stocking on their first Christmas. Laura also expressed her love for family and friends through her talent of baking and decorating cakes. She created many beautiful and special cakes for birthdays and other occasions which were delicious and cherished.
Cats held a special place in Laura’s heart however she was a lover of all animals. Over the years, she always had 1 or 2 cats that made their home with her.
A humble and giving soul, Laura loved the Lord Jesus and devoted much time to reading the Bible and praying for family & friends, and even those who didn’t know her yet. She was a caring person and was always placing others needs before her own. When she met a stranger, she would often ask “Do you know Jesus?” Laura was a long-time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone, and more recently a member of the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Dean McGehee and stepfather, Kenneth Barnes.
Survivors include her mother Helen Barnes, sisters Amy (Craig) Shafer, Melissa (Don) DeLong, nephews Christopher Shafer, Steve (Nicole) DeLong, nieces Alyssa Shafer (Erik Brandau), and Mallory DeLong (Alonzo Markham). Great nephews and nieces, Christian, Carson, Kennedy, Zoey, Maliyah, Malakhi, and 1 on the way. Stepsister Jennifer (David) Best and family, and stepbrother Kevin (Kim) Barnes and family.
Memorial Services with be held at 11:00 A.M. on December 2, 2022 at the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Burial will be held at a later date in Bass Point Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Boone Area Humane Society and the First Evangelical Free Church designated to missions.
