OGDEN, Iowa—Jerry Backman, age 77 of Ogden, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at his home surrounded by family.

Jerry Franklin Backman was born on April 7, 1945 in Fort Bragg, NC, the son of Albin and Corrine (Durden) Backman. Most of his childhood was spent growing up in Sioux City, IA until moving to Wynot, NE where he attended high school.

Jerry was united in marriage with JoNell Eckhardt in 1965 in Nebraska. From this union were two daughters, Shari and Brenda. Jerry and JoNell moved to Ogden, IA in 1985.

Jerry worked in sales for several years but most recently worked for Norris Properties in Boone handling maintenance of the properties. He decided to retire when his health impacted his work.

Jerry was quite the handyman! He knew how to fix everything from electrical to plumbing. He enjoyed woodworking, reading and cooking. Jerry was the family cook, everyone wanted to have holiday meals at Jerry’s house; he was famous for his mac and cheese and cheesecakes. Jerry collected Coca Cola items and Native American artwork from South Dakota.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Elbin; and brother-in-law, Greg Roberts. He is survived by his wife, JoNell; mother, Corrine Backman of Boone; daughters, Shari (Steve) Brennan of Silver Lake, WA and Brenda Backman (Jim Meldrem) of Story City; grandchildren, Joshua Brennan and Samantha (Luke) Sondermayer; great-grandson, Sawyer Sondermayer; sister, Shirley Roberts; and nephew, Neil (Sharon) Promes and family; along with numerous extended family members.

Per Jerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family for later designation.
