Godzicki Selected to Fill Sheriff’s Unexpired Term

Posted on 14 December 2022 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County Board of Supervisors have selected Deputy Andrew Godzicki to fill a vacancy being created by the resignation of Sheriff Gregg Elsberry. The Supervisors voted to 2-to-1 for Godzicki with Supervisor Steve Duffy supporting Deputy Cory Rose. Cole Hoffman, Chief Deputy and Jail Administrator was also in consideration.

During the public hearing prior to the board vote, an employee representative request the Supervisors call for a special election so the public would be able to consider candidates being considered for the appointment. Some of the concerns focused on working environment and employee recruitment and retention.

Boone County Attorney Matt Speers told the Supervisors the law allows them to appoint someone to the position, do nothing at this time which would automatically place the Chief Deputy in the top administrative position, or call for a special election. The public still has an opportunity to petition for a special election, but would need to collect nearly 1,200 qualifying signatures.

Godzicki’s appointment takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, December 31st.
