BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council has voted to go with a special election to fill a vacancy created on the council with the recent resignation of At-large councilmember Steven Ray. Traditionally the council has gone with an appointment to fill a short term vacancy, in this case until the municipal election in November. However, the feeling seemed to be that a petition would be generated calling for a special election even though turn out is usually pretty low. The last municipal election in 2021, the contested At-large race had just under 2,200 votes. The council’s decision directs staff to begin moving forward with preparation for a special election, including the official publication. Additional information for those interested in being candidates is expected later this month.
