BOONE, Iowa—Elaine Marie Cottrell, 89, of Boone, Iowa passed away peacefully at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa on Thursday, February 9, 2023. She had been a resident at Westhaven Community since December of 2019.

Elaine was born on December 8, 1933 in Faribault, Minnesota to Harry and Alice (Shepard) Sanborn, and was one of four daughters. On July 1, 1955 she married Herbert Cottrell at First United Methodist Church in Faribault, Minnesota and moved to Chicago, Illinois. She was a minister’s wife, serving in several churches in the Midwest. Elaine was a homemaker, child caregiver, and friend to many. She was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone, Iowa, and enjoyed playing the French horn in the Boone Municipal Band for many years. Elaine also enjoyed reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, making greeting cards with rubber stamps, camping, gardening, and visiting with her family and friends.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Cottrell; son Brian Cottrell; son-in-law Lyle Babbitt; her parents; and her three sisters, Janet Nielson, Audrey Johnson, and Ruth Peterson. Survivors include son Kevin (Kathie) Cottrell of Boone; daughter Brenda Babbitt of Boone; daughter-in-law Cathy Cottrell of Boone; four grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 20, 2023 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone, with visitation prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. Graveside service will be at Squire Boone Cemetery in Boone, Iowa afterwards.
