BOONE, Iowa—Darwin Ray, age 83 of Boone, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home.
Darwin was born on May 26, 1939 at the family home in Pilot Mound, the son of Everett and Pearl (Quinn) Ray. He attended Ogden Schools and ran around Pilot Mound while growing up at a farm outside of Fraser.
Darwin was united in marriage with Doris JoAnn Wisecup on November 23, 1959 in Boone. From this union, were two sons, Tom and Bobby. Darwin and Jo lived in many places over their years of marriage- Grand Junction, Boone County, Fort Dodge, Mason City and Storm Lake. They lived in Pilot Mound for 27 years while raising their two sons and moved where their jobs took them. Darwin worked for Quinn Machine & Foundry for 27 years until he retired in 1989 due to his health.
Darwin was always happy and eager to talk to people; He would get you talking then he became a great listener. He knew no strangers. Darwin made many trips into Walmart and Hy-Vee and found countless friends to talk to. He enjoyed playing cribbage and checkers with Tom, watching western movies (the older, the better) and scratch off lottery tickets! He was a hunter and a fisherman. Darwin and Jo shared many Friday nights at Saints Ave. Café for their date nights.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl Ray and Everett (Eva) Ray; 16-year-old son, Robert Alan Ray in 1978; brothers, Wally Ray, Leo (Gerri) Ray and Randy Ray; and sister, Joyce Cryder. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Jo; son, Thomas (Debbie) Ray of Boone; 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Emma Belle Johnson of Story City and Vada Jean (Dave) Patten of North Liberty.
Per Darwin’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services held at this time. Burial will be at a later date in Bass Point Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family for later designation.
