BOONE, Iowa—Mary Ann Walters, 91 of Boone, IA went home to the Lord and the love of her life, husband Tom on Friday March 10, 2023. We, her family take comfort in knowing the joy awaiting her through Christ and her joyful reunion with past family and friends.
Mary Ann was born the second of five children to Omar “Nick” Mondt and Mary (Hasstedt) Mondt on April 20, 1931 in Boone, IA. Her father’s early death at 46 years of age did much to shape Mary Ann’s life.
Cleo “Tom” Walters claimed Mary Ann’s heart and the two were wed on August 24, 1948. They proceeded to build a loving family that came to include two daughters, Claudia and Angela. The couple spent years building a successful business, Tom Walters Company of which Mary Ann filled many important roles. The couple were fortunate to have a wonderful network of friends and a huge extended family that meant the world to Mary Ann.
Mary Ann and Tom’s years of marriage were filled with activities and adventures. They enjoyed square dancing. Years were spent touring on Tom’s many Harley Davidsons. As their daughters grew so did the family’s love of horses. Many years followed showing Quarter Horses. Mary Ann was a member of the Boone Saddle Club and the American Quarter Horse Association. She became involved in 4-H leadership roles where she served for many years. The couple enjoyed playing Pinochle and spent decades playing with the same group. Mary Ann also enjoyed playing Bridge with friends.
While Tom enjoyed flying his Swift airplane, Mary Ann preferred to keep her feet on the ground but was pleased to join the many activities of the Boone Pilots Association including serving with Tom as President.
Mary Ann had many interests. Like many of her Mondt cousins, she was a marvelous cook. Besides cooking her favorite pastimes included all types of arts and crafts, history, reading and traveling. She was an enthusiastic Iowa State sports fan. Mary Ann also enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, soaking up the serenity of the landscape and viewing wildlife.
Perhaps Mom enjoyed nothing more than a rollicking, fun cousins get together. As her recent memories escaped her the constant of family never dimmed. Her love of her immediate family was matched by the love of the extended families of her childhood. She repeatedly said, “I am so lucky!” So were we, Mom.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; brothers, Jim and Bob Mondt; and sister, Shirley Tomlinson. Survivors include daughters, Claudia Walters Lovin (Chuck) and Angela Walters both of Boone; grandsons, Benjamin Lovin (Kandi) of Rosemount, MN, Brent Lovin (Stefanie) of West Des Moines; great grandchildren, Ella, Charlie, Harper and Madi Lovin; sister, Pamela Jones of Boone; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial will be in Bass Point Cemetery.
