BOONE, Iowa—Betty Gates, age 90 of Boone, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Westhaven Community.
Betty Jean Brausey was born on October 28, 1932 in Boone, the daughter of Ralph and Ruby (Stotts) Brausey. She attended Boone Public Schools.
On November 19, 1949, Betty was united in marriage with James Lewis Gates in Hiawatha, Kansas. From this union, they were blessed with two children, James Jr and Susan.
Betty enjoyed sewing and quilting, making countless quilts to give away to friends and family, as well as cooking, flower gardening and attending car shows. She loved spending time with her family and friends. In recent years, Betty and her daughter Sue did everything together. They loved to go camping all summer!
Betty was preceded in death by nearly all her family, including her parents; husband James in 2012; son, Jim in 2015; son-in-law, Ed George; and her four siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Sue George of Boone; brother-in-law, Bill Hasstedt; and niece and nephews, Melissa (Jim) Nelson, Bill Hasstedt and Johnny Hasstedt.
Per Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Linwood Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Boone Area Humane Society.
