BOONE, Iowa—LeRoy Sigmund, 103, of Boone, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023, at Westhaven Community in Boone. He had been a resident of Westhaven Independent Living and then Westhaven ALF in Boone since 2002.
LeRoy was born on December 22, 1919, in rural Luther, Iowa, the son of Marion and Opal (Johnson) Sigmund. He was a graduate of Luther High School. He married Margaret Younkin on June 1, 1946, at the Presbyterian Church in Montrose, Iowa. After her passing, LeRoy married Joan Buechler on April 8, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Boone.
He was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone and was instrumental in the formation of Hidden Acres Christian Center. LeRoy also served on the board of Westhaven Community. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater with the United States Army.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret (Younkin) Sigmund; brother, Logan Sigmund; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Burlin Christenson; brother, Roscoe Sigmund; brother-in-law, Frank Ward; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Eloise Sigmund; parents, Marion and Opal Sigmund; brother-in-law, John Younkin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Howard VanAusdall; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Younkin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Elaine Younkin; several nieces and nephews, and very special friend, Josh Dakin.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Sigmund; step-daughters: Kathy Shambaugh, Linda VanBlaricum, Joyce Warburton, and Kaye Root; grandchildren; Erik Melvin, Sarah Melvin Maisonet, and Julie Warburton; sister, Dorothy Ward; sister-in-law, Mildred Sigmund; sister-in-law, Millie Sigmund; sister-in-law, Marylou Sigmund; nephews: Dale Sigmund, Michael Christenson, Ronald Christenson, Jim Pantenburg, Tom Pantenburg, Steve Sigmund, David Sigmund, John VanAusdall, Doug Younkin, and Alan Younkin; nieces: Carol Holmes, Denise Waldo, Joreen Sigmund, and Joann Mutch; and very special friend, Dorothy Dakin.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. Interment will be at Squire Boone Cemetery in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Hidden Acres Christian Center or Westhaven Community.
