Wendy Kinne of Boone Receives Prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award

Posted on 23 June 2023 by KWBG

DES MOINES, Iowa—The Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) is pleased to announce the 2023 recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award is Wendy Kinne, PharmD of Boone. The award was presented at the association’s 2023 Annual Meeting on June 15 in Des Moines.

One of the most prestigious awards in the pharmacy profession, the Bowl of Hygeia provides special recognition to a pharmacist who has made considerable contributions in the area of community service. Part of a national awards program, the award recognizes one pharmacist from each state annually for outstanding civic and community contributions. Iowa’s recipient is chosen each year by a committee of civic leaders from across the state, and the selection is unknown until the evening the award is presented.

Wendy Kinne, PharmD is the pharmacist owner of Medical Associates Pharmacy & Clinic Pharmacy in Boone. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy in 1993 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 2005, both from the University of Iowa. After practicing in Boone for twenty years, Wendy took ownership of the pharmacy in September of 2013. Wendy also serves as a student pharmacist preceptor for Drake University and the University of Iowa and is certified in providing immunizations, Medication Therapy Management (MTM), and therapeutic shoes.

In the town of Boone, Wendy is known to give her time, talent, and treasure generously to many community organizations, including the Boone County Hospital Board, Educational Endowment Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Central Iowa Healthcare Coalition, 4-H, Childserve, University of Iowa Athletic Club, Kiwanis and Boone High School, among many others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wendy kindly offered her building space to operate a socially-distant COVID vaccination clinic, reducing exposure for community members in Boone. Like many healthcare providers, she dedicated extensive hours in helping vaccinate her community, which helped the county achieve one of the highest vaccination rates in the state of Iowa.

Wendy is supported and recognized for her efforts in the pharmacy and in the community, as over twenty nomination letters were submitted from community and business leaders, pharmacy staff members, students and mentees, as well as her family and children. According to one Boone community leader, “her impact cannot be overstated.”

“Each year, the presentation of IPA’s Bowl of Hygeia Award is a highlight of the Annual Meeting. Recognizing Wendy for her immense contributions to the community of Boone was inspirational to all in attendance,” said Kate Gainer, Executive Vice President & CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association.
