BOONE, Iowa—Marjorie “Midge” McLaughlin, 95, of Boone, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the Madrid Home in Madrid.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 1, 2023, with a time of sharing at 7:00 P.M., at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, in Boone.
Midge was born November 1, 1927, in Moingona, IA, the daughter of Ed and Lillie (Rose) Dailey where she attended the town’s one-room school house.
Midge married William McLaughlin December 3, 1960. The couple had two children, but later divorced.
Midge lived most of her life in the Boone area but spent around 20 years in California where she worked in the Lockheed photo lab and a bowling alley where she saw a few Hollywood stars and collected her share of bowling trophies.
In Boone, Midge and her sister Ruth, were known as the “papering ladies” hanging wallpaper in many houses and businesses in their 20 years in the business. She was an excellent cook and used those talents working at the Boone County Hospital and then the Eastern Star Masonic Home, where she retired at almost 80 years old.
Midge had another special talent. She started playing the piano by ear at the age of 2 and was still playing up until her last birthday for the people at the Madrid Home. If she ever heard a song, she could just sit down and play it.
Midge’s family was small after losing her infant son, David, to meningitis at the age of 2, but her love for them was huge. For many years it was just her and her daughter, Mandy, so they were very close—first spending time watching TV and movies together and later taking trips to the casino. Whenever possible Midge devoted her time to her pride and joy, her granddaughter, Ashlyn. Ashlyn and “Mema” spent after school and summers together long after Ashlyn was old enough to stay alone and formed a very special bond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son; siblings, Ruth Greenfield, Mildred Staker, Bernice Bergloff, Belva Kester, Donald Dailey, Eileen Siders, Archie Dailey and Leonard Dailey.
Midge is survived by her daughter, Mandy Welder of Boone and granddaughter, Ashlyn (Matt) Hubbard of Stanhope.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be mailed to the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, c/o Marjorie McLaughlin Family, 1006 6th Street, Boone, IA 50036. The family will donate them to things that were close to Midge’s heart.
