BOONE, Iowa—Betty Jean Ferry, age 101, of Boone, passed away on August 1, 2023 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa.
Betty Jean was born October 30, 1921 in Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Ray and Ruth (Benbow)) Gutterridge.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Boone, Iowa since 1937 and a graduate of Boone High School.
On June 30, 1940, Betty Jean was united in marriage to Cecil M. Ferry at the First Baptist Church of Boone. After living in Clinton and Des Moines, the couple returned to Boone to make their permanent home. They became the parents of two daughters, Joleen Kay Vale and Connie Sue Iles.
She was an active member of her church, having served on various boards and committees. She and her husband were Youth Leaders for some time.
Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Floyd R. Gutterridge; her parents-in-law; her son-in-law, Lynn Vale; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Ferry, Iona Franklin, and Dorothy Baker; three brothers-in-law, Carl Franklin, Eugene Baker, and Clyde Ferry.
Betty Jean is survived by her daughters, Joleen Kay Vale and Connie Sue (Darrell) Iles; five grandchildren, Scott (Dawn) Vale, Jason Vale, Gary (Tracy) Iles, Joseph (Elizabeth) Iles, and Sherrie Jo (Dean) Cords. Also surviving are 14 great grandchildren, Cara (Josh) Treybal, Ethan and Cloe Vale, Abby, Jackson, and Sophie Jo Vale, McKenna and Kael Iles, Zachary and Logan Boyd, Collin Cords, Kyra, Berlin, and Kinnick Iles; one great-great granddaughter, Josie; one great-great grandson due in August; other relatives; and many friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the First Baptist Church, 612 Eighth Street, Boone, Iowa, with Pastor Janell Bloem officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church or the family to use at their discretion.
