BOXHOLM, Iowa—Lindie Blake Phipps, 66, of Boxholm passed away on August 2, 2023, at his home surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.

Lindie was born on April 18,1957, in Boone, Iowa to James V. and Twila Sue (Bennett) Phipps. Growing up, Lindie was part of 4-H, rodeo, and he loved spending time with his horse, Little Boy. Lindie attended Grand Community School in Boxholm and graduated in 1975.

On June 17, 1978, Lindie was united in marriage with Julie Marie Williams in Boone, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children, Lindsey Marie, and Blake William.

Lindie had a passion for carpentry and woodworking. He made sure everything he built or created was of the best quality. This was evident in the homes of many who were fortunate enough to have something he created. His love of carpentry led to him working at The Door Store in Ames and then as a carpenter for the Boone High School. Lindie also spent ten years working as a press mechanic at Silgan Containers.

Lindie always wanted to be in law enforcement and in 1991, he became a Deputy for the Boone County Sheriff’s department, a position he held for four years. Some of his favorite people and stories came from his job at the Sheriff’s office.

Lindie enjoyed many hobbies and always liked being in the timber. He enjoyed hunting everything from deer to mushrooms. He also enjoyed hunting for unique treasures while metal detecting or going to an auction to find another butter churn to add to his impressive collection. Fishing was something he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren. He always looked forward to trips to Canada. Lindie loved classic cars, and always enjoyed going to car shows with his son, Blake, with their 1973 Dodge Challenger, Fiona.

Anyone who visited Lindie’s home knew they would never leave hungry. His love and talent for cooking ensured that there would always be something good to eat with more than enough to go around. The door was always open. In 2009, Lindie and his wife Julie opened Grand Times Catering, a business that proudly served meals to thousands of soldiers from all over the country during their sixteen years in business.

Lindie loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and spent many fall Saturdays up at 4AM to head to Kinnick Stadium with his family and friends. Away games were spent at home with family, friends, and a big pot of Lindie’s homemade chili. You were sure to see Lindie pace back and forth during the entire game even if the Hawkeyes were winning!

In recent years, Lindie would watch all of the games at home, but still had the same passion for his Hawks, a passion he passed on to daughter, Lindsey. When Lindie wasn’t cheering on the Hawkeyes in the fall, he could be found working in the field.

Of all of his jobs and hobbies, Lindie’s favorite title was Papa. He adored his seven grandchildren, Nathan, Kloey, Kobe, Collin, Karsen, Kora, and Kenadie, and always had a knack to get a fussy baby to sleep.

Lindie will always be remembered for his generosity and his happiness when he could surprise someone. One of his favorite things to do was hiding surprise gifts for his children on Christmas morning. His favorite part of life was seeing his children and grandchildren happy.

Lindie was preceded in death by his parents, James V. and Twila Sue Phipps; mother-in-law, Shirley Williams; brother-in-law, Sam Carroll; nieces, Jennifer Rose, and Angela Anderson; and nephews, Jesse Anderson, Christian Anderson, and Tony Phipps.

Survivors include, his wife of 45 years, Julie Phipps of Boxholm; daughter, Lindsey (James) Comer of Ogden; son, Blake (Whitney) Phipps of Fraser; sisters, Ginger Jones of Boone and Jamie Carroll of Stratford; brothers, Randie Phipps of Pilot Mound and Weslie (Teresa) Phipps of Pilot Mound; and seven grandchildren, Nathan, Kloey, Kobe, Collin, Karsen, Kora, and Kenadie.
