Posted on 15 December 2023 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—Iowa House District 48 Representative Phil Thompson (R-Boone) announced today (Friday) that he will not seek re-election in 2024.  Thompson was first elected in 2018 to represent the former House District 47, which encompassed all of Greene County and western Boone County.  After redistricting, Thompson was elected to represent House District 48.

Thompson said, “Words cannot express my gratitude for the people of Greene, Boone, and Story counties.  Serving my friends, neighbors, and the community that raised me in the Iowa House has been the greatest honor of my life.”

Thompson has served on twelve standing committees and three budget subcommittees.  He is currently the chairman of the Public Safety Committee.  In his time in the legislature, Thompson championed efforts to improve rural emergency medical services and expand Second Amendment rights.  In 2021, Thompson floor-managed legislation making Iowa the first state to require full-time, in-person learning opportunities for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.  That legislation was adopted by other states shortly after.

Thompson will serve the remainder of his current term, which ends on January 1st, 2025.  House District 48 encompasses all of Boone County and parts of Story County.
