BOONE, Iowa—Larry Young, 74, of Boone, Iowa, passed away on December 11, 2023. He was born April 8, 1949, at the Boone County Hospital the son of Errett Young and Anita Porter.
On October 24, 1976, he married Sherrin Thies at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Larry attended Boone High School. He was a machinist at Heinrich Envelope Company for nearly 25 years. He enjoyed playing in the annual Industrial Park softball tournament.
Larry was also a groundskeeper and maintenance man at the Eastern Star Masonic Home. He was revered by many for his attention to detail and ability to repair nearly any issue a resident may have had. He was often called upon personally to assist them when they had a need. Larry cherished the friendships that he made with the residents and took immense pride in the well-manicured grounds.
He was preceded in death by his father, Errett Young; mother, Anita Peters; stepfather, Jack Peters; sister, Errita Lingelbach; and two nephews, Andy Moore and Travis Watson.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Ayrrin (John) Kostelnick of El Paso, Illinois; four grandchildren: Isabelle, Francesca, Henry, and Beatrice Kostelnick; two sisters, Barbara (Mike) Barker, and Cindy Watson; longtime companion, Luann Bechtel; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Larry was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, mushroom hunting, and fishing. He was an accomplished marksman. Larry was also a competitive bowler who enjoyed many nights at Imperial Lanes and made his way onto “Let’s Go Bowling” hosted by Jim Zabel. For many years, Larry could be found at the ballpark watching his daughter play softball or in the backyard helping her perfect her fastball.
Larry’s greatest loves, however, were his four grandchildren. He had a child-like wonder about him that was evident in the twinkle in his eye when he was with them. He liked to watch them ride his two-seater bicycle. Whether he was playing a game with them, watching them tumble around his living room, or helping them operate a newly unwrapped toy, he lit up when they were around.
Whether you knew him as Larry, “Cautious” or “Larrbo”, you knew him as a quiet yet competitive, kind, and capable soul.
Memorials may be made to Toys for Tots.
