BOONE, Iowa—Diane Smith, age 64, of Boone, IA, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Rochester, MN, on January 26, 2024, while receiving treatment for cancer.
Diane was born in Des Moines, IA, on October 12, 1959, to Lloyd and Janelle (Wohlhutter) Mein and spent much of her childhood in Lake View, IA. Diane graduated from Lake View- Auburn High School in 1978 and married Jeffry Smith on October 3, 1981. They met in kindergarten. After walking her home from kindergarten one day, Jeff asked Diane for her number, but she didn’t know it!
Diane worked as an administrative assistant and raised her three children in Boone, IA. Diane enjoyed quilting retreats, road trips with Jeff to all fifty states, spending time with her granddaughters, motorcycle rides, and being home with her dogs, Henry and Goldie.
Diane was preceded in death by her brother, Jeffrey Mein, and her parents, Lloyd and Janelle.
Diane is survived by her husband, Jeff Smith; sons, Steven Smith (Nathan Clegg) of Minneapolis, MN, and Michael Smith of West Des Moines, IA; daughter, Danelle (Brennan) Williams; granddaughters, Kensie, Annie, and Ellie Williams of Boone, IA; and siblings: Cindy (Michael) Korb, Colleen (Paul) Bendon, Dennis (Linda) Mein, and Brenda (Jeff) Hathaway.
In lieu of a funeral service, the family is scheduling a celebration of life at a future date. Memorials may be directed to the family and can be sent to c/o Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone, Iowa.
