BOONE, Iowa—Shayna Voss, RN, Boone County Family Medicine North, is being honored as the 2024 Daisy Award Winner at the Boone County Hospital. She was recognized at the Annual Nurses Week Recognition Breakfast at Boone County Hospital.
The Daisy (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The Daisy Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.
“As a co-worker of Shayna’s, I have always noticed the exceptional care she gives to our community. I have seen Shayna give extraordinary, compassionate care on many occasions but I would like to highlight one in particular,” says a co-worker of Shayna’s. “Shayna knew that a patient’s birthday was going to be on the same day she had an office procedure. This patient is well known in the community and many would consider them to be less fortunate; this patient on many occasions has been homeless. Knowing this, Shayna made this patient a homemade birthday cake and surprised her during her visit. The patient was very surprised and happy that someone had remembered her birthday. As nurses we sometimes lose touch with our compassionate side but seeing this today was inspirational to myself and other nurses, and I know it made this patient’s day, if not month. Thank you Shayna, your exceptional care does not go unnoticed.”
A patient said, “Every single time my wife comes in for a check up, Shayna makes her feel like a member of the family and really makes it easier for my wife to have the courage to come in.” Thank you Shayna for all you do.
