LeRoy Hamilton

BOONE, Iowa—LeRoy Arthur Hamilton, 90, of Boone, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2024 in his home.

LeRoy was born September 12, 1934, in Boone, the son of Merle and Beulah (Knight) Hamilton. He attended school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1952.

LeRoy met Joan Logsdon in high school and asked her to prom on the steps of the First United Methodist Church. Joan and LeRoy were high school sweethearts. They were united in marriage on July 24, 1955, at the First United Methodist Church and were married for nearly 65 years. LeRoy and Joan raised two children and traveled the world, exploring all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Russia and Africa.

LeRoy was employed in various positions with the Iowa Department of Transportation for 44 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, Iowa State Cyclone football games and attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s events.

It was a family tradition that LeRoy started, for them all to attend the Yankee Doodle Pops Concert at the state capital every July 4th. LeRoy was a member of the Elks Club, where he had held the position of an Exalted Ruler, and a judge for the Ritualistic Ceremony for the Elks throughout the United States. He is a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, and belonged to the Boone Jaycees and Boone County Historical Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Joan in 2020.

LeRoy is survived by his daughter, Debra (Rod) Potter of Des Moines; son, Scott (Carol) Hamilton of Ames; grandchildren, Rodney Potter, Paul (Tara Yarges) Potter, Garrett (Shannon) Hamilton and Allison (Taylor) Fox; nine great-grandchildren; sister, JoAnn Harvey of Muscatine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church, 703 Arden Street, Boone. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Boone Historical Society or to the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace Museum.
