Braddock, Pestotnik are champions at Pella

The Boone boys’ wrestling team had 2 champions at the Bill Van Horn Invitational Saturday, Dec. 21, in Pella. 

Ajay Braddock won at 126 pounds, and Joseph Pestotnik won at 175 pounds. 

Braddock received a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals pinned Brace Naber of Cedar Rapids Xavier in 4:00. In the semifinals, he won by technical fall over Hudson Ritzert of Pella, 17-2. In the 1st place match, Braddock won by major decision over Ty Lorentzen of Oskaloosa, 16-3. 

Pestotnik also received a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he pinned Dalton Zednichek of Marshalltown, in 4:45. In the semifinals, we won by decision over Dein Gaye of Des Moines North-Hoover, 17-10. In the 1st place match, Pestotnik won by decision over Dain Burkhart of Fairfield, 7-2. 

At 157 pounds, Trent Eckard placed 3rd. In the first round, Eckard won by major decision over Kinzer Jaennette of South Tama County, 15-3. He was pinned in the quarterfinals by Kieran Dahms-Cox of Van Meter, 11-6. In the consolation rounds, he pinned Tristan Atherton of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in 1:04, pinned Hunter Haynes of Pella in 1:08 and won by medical forfeit over Carson Wright of Marshalltown. In the 3rd place match, Eckard pinned Gemraine Ngoma of Cedar Rapids Xavier in 2:40.

Boone placed 9th in the 16-team field with 90 points. Cedar Rapids Xavier won the meet with 188.5 points. 

Other teams participating were Marshalltown, Fairfield, North Mahaska, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, Newton, Oskaloosa, Pella, Davis County, Van Meter, Knoxville, South Tama County, Montezuma, Mason City and Des Moines North-Hoover. 

Boone will host Ogden in a dual meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6, in Boone.
