Braddock wins conference championship

Ajay Braddock was champion in his weight class for the Boone boys’ wrestling team at the Raccoon River Conference Tournament Saturday, February 1, at Adel. 

Joseph Pestotnik finished 2nd, Mason Oostenink and Brody Warrick were 3rd, and Trent Eckard placed 5th at the tournament for the Toreadors. 

Braddock pinned Logan Connick of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn in :50 in the quarterfinals before winning by technical fall over Grayson Hedrick of Ballard, 17-2, in the semifinals. 

In the 1st-place match at 126 pounds, Braddock beat McCain Hewitt of Bondurant-Farrar by technical fall, 19-3. 

Pestotnik pinned Chase Rial of Bondurant-Farrar in 2:35 in the quarterfinals before winning by decision over Kieran Polking of Carroll, 8-4, in the semifinals. 

In the 1st-place match at 175 pounds, Pestotnik lost to Noah Noland of Carlisle by decision, 4-1. 

Oostenink pinned Keller Henning of ADM in 2:00 in the quarterfinals before losing to Sebastian Brooks of Winterset, 5-0, in the semifinals. 

In the consolation semifinals at 113 pounds, Oostenink pinned Owen Davidson of Ballard in 3:05 before pinning Judsen Shelton of Carlisle in 2:24 in the 3rd-place match. 

Warrick beat Mario Hamm of Carlisle by technical fall, 15-0, in the quarterfinals before losing by decision to Owen Klocke of Carroll, 4-3, in the semifinals. 

In the consolation semifinals at 157 pounds, Warrick won by technical fall over Jace Cory of Ballard, 15-0, before winning by major decision over Luke Engbretson of North Polk, 14-6 in the 3rd-place match. 

Eckard won by decision over Jayden Leland of Ballard, 14-10, in the quarterfinals before losing by technical fall to Jax Jensen of Winterset, 17-2. In the semifinals. 

In the consolation semifinals at 150 pounds, Eckard lost by decision to Kaeden Campbell of ADM, 6-3, before pinning Blake Briley of Bondurant-Farrar in 5:04 in the 5th-place match. 

Other Boone wrestlers participating in the conference meet were George Grote at 132 pounds and Ashten Petersen at 144 pounds. 

The boys will compete in district wrestling at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 15 at Johnson. 

Teams in the district include ADM, Bondurant-Farrar, Boone, Des Moines Lincoln, Des Moines Roosevelt, West Des Moines Dowling Catholic, Johnston, and Waukee.
