Samantha Springer hit a half-court buzzer-beater as the Madrid girls’ basketball team stunned Orient-Macksburg, 41-38, Thursday, February 13, at Orient in Class 1A regional play.
The Tigers took the early lead and were up, 6-4, at the end of the 1st quarter, but the Bulldogs led, 19-16, at the half.
The game remained tight with Orient-Macksburg up, 29-27, at the end of the 3rd quarter.
However, Madrid had a stronger 4th quarter and ended up with the 41-38 victory.
Laura Eagleton led all scorers with 22 points on 8 field goals, 3 3-pointers and 3 free throws.
Lauren Dvorak and Olivia Ostert each had 6 points on 2 3-pointers.
Jilliam Olmstead had 4 points, and Springer’s only basket was the one to win the game.
Springer led the Tigers with 4 assists, and Audrey Brown added 2.
For the Madrid defense, Eagleton grabbed 12 rebounds and 2 steals.
Dvorak had 8 rebounds and 2 blocks while Olmstead had 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal.
Madrid (7-15) advances to face Class 1A, No. 11, Lynnville-Sully at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, at Lynnville.
Orient-Macksburg ends its season at 12-9.
This was the final game held at the Orient-Macksburg gymnasium because the school district will dissolve after this school year.
