Toryn Severson scored a school record 53 points as the Madrid boys’ basketball team exploded to a 118-36 victory over Melcher-Dallas Monday, February 17, at Madrid, in the first round of Class 1A, Region 6, district play.
The Tigers led 40-16, at the end of the 1st quarter and had a commanding 87-24 lead at the half.
With the continuous clock running during the 2nd half, Madrid ended the 3rd quarter ahead, 112-25, and won the game, 119-26.
Severson’s 53 points were made on 24 of 32 field goal shooting, including 1 for 4 from the 3-point line.
He also was 4 for 4 on free throws.
Jevyn Severson added 24 points on 12 of 13 field goal shooting, and Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz had 15 points and was a perfect 6 for 6 on field goals, including 3 for 3 on 3-pointers.
Ortiz-Alaniz had 11 assists while Brody Buck added 9.
For the Tiger defense, Toryn Severson had 12 rebounds, 1 block and 3 steals.
Buck grabbed 5 rebounds and 3 steals and Ortiz-Alaniz had 5 rebounds and 8 steals.
Madrid improved to 22-0 on the season while Melcher-Dallas fell to 3-17.
The Tigers will host Moravia (13-10) at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 20, in the second round of district play.
