BOONE, Iowa—Chad Behn announces he will be seeking the Republican nomination for Iowa House District 48. The district represents Boone County and portions of western Story County.
Behn was born and raised in rural Boone County. He grew up on a farm and graduated from Boone High School. He then went on to graduate from DMACC and Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications.
After college, Behn returned home to farm and raise a family. “It is very important to expand opportunities for young Iowans to stay in Iowa. Job opportunities are the key to future growth in the state,” said Behn. “My experience working on a family farm has provided me with a wide range of life lessons and skill sets. Farming provides insight into the challenges of business ownership and the daily impact that government and its policies have on business decisions,” Behn further stated.
In 2016, Behn was elected as a Boone County Supervisor, where he proudly developed a record of protecting taxpayer dollars by keeping property taxes in check. “There’s a constant pressure to add to the budget. Instead, we should be working towards opportunities to make the budget more efficient and to keep taxes low,” he said. When Behn was on the Board of Supervisors, Boone County’s property taxes were among the lowest 10 percent in the state, which incentivized businesses to move to the county.
Behn also served on Central Iowa Community Services Mental Health Board, which gave him insight into the challenges of mental health. His passion for mental health only grew as he was able to advocate for local mental health challenges at the State Legislature during his time on the Board. Behn looks forward to continuing his advocacy for mental health and finding solutions for treatment at both state and local levels.
“There are tough challenges ahead for Iowans with inflation and interest rates only increasing. As your elected leader, I will work day in and day out to protect taxpayers’ hard earned dollars and stand up for businesses. We need more leaders in the legislature who lead with true Iowa principles and stand up for the values of their constituents,” Behn said.
Behn currently farms and has two sons that he hopes will continue to call Iowa their home. His oldest son, Evan, studies at DMACC and plays baseball for the DMACC Bears. His youngest, Levi, is currently a sophomore at Boone High and keeps busy with baseball and basketball. The Behns are members of Sacred Heart Parish in Boone.
