BOONE, Iowa—Boone Police have charges pending in a stabbing incident that occurred Tuesday in Boone. In a press release for the Boone Police Department, additional information was released. According to the release, on January 16th, 2018 at approximately 5:56 pm, Boone Police Officers were called to the Boone County Law Enforcement Center. There, Officers met with Mary Myers, who stated that she had stabbed Joe Wirth, age 65 of Boone, during a physical altercation inside their shared residence at 315 State St.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called to assist. During the investigation, it was determined that Myers willfully and deliberately stabbed Wirth multiple times causing injuries that led to his death. Based on information obtained during the investigation, it appears this act occurred on the evening of Sunday, January 14th, 2018.
Myers, age 59 of Boone, was charged with Murder in the First Degree and remanded to the custody of the Boone County Jail.
Wirth was transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa. An autopsy on Wirth is scheduled for January 18, 2018. The cause and manner of death will be determined when the autopsy results are finalized by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
Boone Police Chief John Wiebold says an arrest without disposition is not an indication of guilt.
