Thompson Announces State House Run

KWBG 03/24/18

BOONE, Iowa—The ballot continues to take shape for the June 5th Primary Election.  This week, local partisan candidates need to have paperwork filed with their respective County Auditors.  In Boone County, there are four positions in the Primary Election, one seat on the Board of Supervisors, County Attorney, County Treasurer and County Recorder.  Wednesday, the 28th is the deadline to get necessary paper work submitted to be on the ballot.

Iowa House District 47 will have new representation.  Unchallenged candidates in the primary are Democrat David Weaver from Rippey and Libertarian Patrick Shaw from Boone.

There is a three way race for the Republican spot on the ballot.  Don Batt of Boone has submitted paper work with the Secretary of State.  Last week, Victoria Sinclair announced her campaign.

This week, Phil Thompson, a Jefferson-Scranton High School graduate, announced his candidacy to serve the people of Greene and Boone Counties in the Iowa House of Representatives.

Thompson, an Airborne Ranger, served in the US Army for eight years, including a tour to Al Anbar Province, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He finished his active duty time at West Point, where he studied Systems Engineering for two years before returning home and joining the Iowa National Guard.

While this is Thompson‘s first time on the ballot, he is not new to promoting conservative values. In 2014, Thompson campaigned for Dr. Sam Clovis as he sought the position of State Treasurer. Last election, he managed ground organization for the NRA as Iowa Campaign Field Representative for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action.

Thompson has spent the last two legislative sessions working as an assistant to Representative Dawn Pettengill, who commented, “Phil is smart and a hard worker.  As my assistant, he has been by my side for every conversation for two years and can hit the ground running for Greene and Boone Counties. Can’t wait to see what he does!”

Thompson is active in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Greene County Republican Central Committee. He also serves on the Bob Carman Patriot Scholarship board and the Floyd W Brown Scholarship board.

“I will never turn down an opportunity to serve the community that raised me.” Thompson said, “As your Representative, I’ll live and advocate our hometown values, work to bring infrastructure to our rural communities and help our local businesses grow.”
