BOONE, IA – Several months ago, several Boone High School alums gathered together with the idea to honor Mo Kelley for his contributions to Boone. According to a letter from that group, “There have been many notable Boone people over the years who have outstanding accomplishments attributed to them and have left a positive mark on the community. However, there is one we believe stands out among many others. We are referring to Mr. Morris ‘Mo’ Kelley.” They further describe Mo as “a BHS and BJC grad, an Army veteran, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a coach, a journalist, a broadcaster, a mentor, a role model, a community leader and and overall significant contributor to Boone and the entire Boone area community”.
Boone Mayor John Slight has proclaimed Saturday, July 21 as “Mo Kelley Day.” There will be a gathering of friends and relatives from 3 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone with refreshments and comments by the Mayor and a few others who will share some thoughts on the contributions of Mr. Kelley.
At about 5 p.m., those interested may travel to Memorial Park to see the monogrammed benches that pay tribute to the Mo’s sixty plus years of, mostly media and youth baseball, service to the community.
Mo Kelley spent many years as the sports voice of KWBG AM1590. Here are a few photos from his early days at the radio station.
