BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council has directed staff to collect information on options and the cost associated with conducting a survey to determine the size of the deer herd with in the Boone city limits. The Council made that decision Monday evening, following a public meeting which drew about three-dozen people interested in having a say about possible plans for a controlled deer hunt. Boone Mayor John Slight said those at the meeting seemed divided in the a group supporting a management plan, those opposing a plan and those that are hunters.
On KWBG Tuesday, Slight said there are no plans for a hunt this year. He said a survey would need to be done to see if an urban deer management plan is necessary and a survey couldn’t be done until January or February. The results of a survey would provide information needed to determine whether or not to continue with a plan that could involve controlled hunting within the city limits.
City staff may have information available by the next meeting, November 5th, about the cost of a possible deer survey.
