Ogden Man Among Veterans Recognized During Medal Ceremony

NEW HARTFORD, Iowa—Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will hosted a veterans’ medal presentation ceremony at Purdue Global in Urbandale for 9 Iowa war veterans today.  Grassley helped these veterans and their family members provide documentation to the Army, Air Force and Navy Review Boards to receive their medals.

Vietnam Navy Veteran David Ohlson of Ogden was presented with National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Honorable discharge button, Vietnam Service Medal with bronze service star and the Vietnam Lapel pin.

Others recognized during the ceremony:

Clive: Widow Peggy Stanley of Clive was presented with Vietnam Army veteran Dennis Ritter’s medals who was killed in action in 1970: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with palm device, Expert Marksman Badge with Auto Rifle Bar, Vietnam Lapel Pin, Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksman Badge with Rifle bar and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal Unit Citation, First Class and the Vietnam Lapel Pin.

Indianola: Widow Randi Powell of Indianola was presented with Vietnam Army Veteran Larry D. Powell’s medals: Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with palm device, Sharpshooter badge with rifle bar, Vietnam Parachutist Badge and Vietnam Lapel Pin.

West Des Moines: WWII Army Veteran Robert H. Clark of West Des Moines was presented with the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, Marksman Badge with rifle bar and the Army Lapel Pin.

Winterset: WWII Army Veteran Floyd J. Dickerson of Winterset was presented with the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

Ottumwa: Korea Veteran Keith E. Carter of Ottumwa was presented with the Good Conduct Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Ankeny: Vietnam Army Veteran Steve C. Shannon of Ankeny was presented with the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar, Marksman Badge with auto rifle bar and the Vietnam Lapel Pin.

Bondurant: Vietnam Navy Veteran Kenneth W. McNichols of Bondurant was presented with the National Defense Service Medal, Honorable Discharge Button, Honorable Reserve Discharge Button and the Vietnam Lapel pin.

Des Moines: Vietnam Air Force Veteran Carlos G. Ubinas of Des Moines was presented with the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Lapel Pin.

Grassley said, “It’s an honor to present these medals to our brave veterans or their family members here in their place. These courageous Iowans put their lives on the line in the defense of our nation’s freedom and deserve proper recognition. As a nation, we owe them a debt of gratitude.”
